Views of the city and the mountains are spectacular from this 1930s traditional style house. The owners wanted outside space from which to enjoy the view, as well as to accommodate large parties. A dining area off the kitchen was rebuilt with new doors and an opening wall system. This space opens to a new porch with an outdoor kitchen at one end. From the porch there are steps down to a new deck. The steep slope of the site was an engineering and construction challenge, and the site layout dictated the octagonal plan of the new porch and deck. Construction emphasized low-maintenance and permanence throughout. Photography: Corky Miller
