Boise Neighborhood, Portland Oregon
Renovated: 2004
Contractor: Carl Munz
I was my own client for this project, buying an essentially derelict house and rebuilding it with the goal of eliminating the functional flaws of a 100 year old house without destroying its character. The house received entirely new electrical, plumbing, and heating systems, and the kitchen, bathrooms, and one of the upstairs bedrooms were stripped down to the studs, reconfigured if necessary, and rebuilt. Interior casing was removed, its paint stripped off, and then it was reinstalled. Several aluminum replacement windows were replaced with wood windows close in style to what would have been original, but also meeting modern egress requirements. Insulation, seismic stiffening, and roof ventilation were retrofitted into the house as well as was practical.
