Desert Hot Springs Conceptual Design

How do you build in a place which is beautiful because it is empty?  How do you create physical and psychological shelter in an empty place with winds so fierce they can rip buildings apart and deposit drifts of soil? What is the right level of removal from this harsh, beautiful environment to create the physical comfort necessary for appreciation of place without cutting off actual experience of it?

All I want to do here is make buildings which go away. This place doesn't want architectural statements or other trash to litter the desert.
